Savage Garden

Artist: Savage Garden
Genre: Pop
Label: Sony
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (424 votes)
Release: 1997
Summary: As these two boys from Brisbane, Australia, know, it doesn't hurt to be endorsed by Rosie O'Donnell. When the Queen of Nice sang the words to "I Want You" and the praises of the duo behind it, the song catapulted up the charts. Largely ignored by the serious music press, Savage Garden have cultivated a vast fan base on the strength of their music--and airplay--alone. As formulaic as it may appear, the ballad "Truly Madly Deeply" was lodged at No. 1 for week after week for a reason--it's damn catchy and a welcome reprieve from overdone rock ballads. Lead singer Darren Hayes lends the same yearning vocal style to the third--and best--single from the album, "To the Moon & Back," a slice of synth-pop genius that culminates in a dramatic crescendo of strings, courtesy of coleader Daniel Jones. Shadows & Light

Artist: Wilson Phillips
Genre: Pop
Label: Indent Series
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (23 votes)
Release: 1996
Summary: Wilson Phillips were one of the few pop groups who evidently listened to the critics who accused them of being lightweight barbie dolls with nothing of relevance to say, because on this sophomore album they addressed much deeper issues than on their enjoyably lightweight, multiplatinum debut. Unfortunately, the new sound was lost on many of their young fans, and music tastes had in any case moved away from their brand of music, and the trio found themselves struggling to even reach the top twenty, where previously they had topped the charts with ease three times in twelve months. This is a shame, because "Shadows And Light" is in fact a far stronger album than its still impressive preddecessor. Vastly underrated lead single "You Won't See Me Cry" is the best thing they ever did, a soaring ballad with the strongest harmonic vocals of their career. Its maturity is reflected throughout the album, which is largely concerned with the troubled upbringing the girls experienced around their famous fathers. This is best addressed in Carnie Wilsons beautiful, consumately honest "Flesh & Blood", which addresses both her anger and her sympathy towards her estranged and fragile father. Her vocals are flat out beautiful, and the lyrics are the best she or any of the group wrote. Unfortunately, the deeply personal song did not work as a commercial single, and its failure to chart ended the girls career for the time. Chynna Phillips addresses her father on "Where Are You" and "All The Way From New York", which complement each other. The former is written about Chynna's confused, painful childhood, and her inability at the time to understand her fathers behavior. The latter is a warm song of forgiveness, written shortly after she finally regained contact with him. The album is not always so serious though. "It's Only Life" is a brilliant, boisterous song which was bizarrely never a single, despite being the most obvious hit on the record. Underrated hit "Give It Up" is reminiscent of Earth, Wind and Fire with its flambouyant brass sections and infectious chorus. Carnie's chocolate vocals give "This Doesn't Have To Be Love" an earthy soulfulness which should have made it a slow dance perrenial, while her lead on "Fuelled For Houston" is perfect silly fun, and a stunning vocal. Although this album is sadly out of print for the time being, I highly reccomend purchasing a second-hand copy, or otherwise getting hold of it. It takes longer to grab you than their debut, but it is ultimately their finest achievement and a sadly overlooked glimpse at three extraordinary lives.

Shepherd Moons

Artist: Enya
Genre: International
Label: Reprise / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (148 votes)
Release: 1991
Summary: The success of her first international hit, "Watermark", confirmed Enya as less a singer or songwriter than a sonic architect: working with producer Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan, the classically-trained pianist built vaulting cathedrals of sound, framed by luminous piano, shimmering synthesizer orchestrations, and, above all, the seemingly infinite layers of vocal harmonies she plied on every song. The deeply romantic Celtic pop on its 1991 successor, "Shepherd Moons", sustains the same spectrum of hushed reverie and surging, rhapsodic releases, as well as its mix of ballads, floating midtempo pieces, and forays into Celtic and Latin--and it's every bit as seductive. The terminally hip will sneer, but it's no accident that "Caribbean Blue," the best known song here, managed to sneak onto modern rock, top 40, "adult alternative" and public radio playlists. "--Sam Sutherland"

The Singles 81-85

Artist: Depeche Mode
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Reprise / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (59 votes)
Release: 1999
Comments: BMG Philippines
Uses the Just Can't Get Enough cover picture

Summary: The question we have to ask is "Why?" Depeche Mode released "The Singles, 86-98" because there was no comprehensive singles collection representing 1986 through 1998. But why release a singles compilation covering 1981 through 1985 when "Catching Up with Depeche Mode" already covers this turf? For one thing, the singles "Leave in Silence," "Everything Counts," and "People Are People," which were absent from "Catching Up", are included here. All the songs are digitally remastered, but how much does digital enhancement really do to improve the sound of early-'80s synth-pop, which is so dated? Not much. However, it's natural to release a comprehensive singles collection that nicely coincides with "86-98". Both compilations are great for first-timers. And the two remixes on "81-85" ("Photographic [Some Bizarre Version]" and "Just Can't Get Enough [Schizo Mix]") will snag collectors. But maybe the answer has nothing to do with marketable packaging. DM have always fancied themselves as notorious. The liner notes for "81-85" include one negative review and one positive for each song. Perhaps as an attempt to fend off the specter of "where are they now?" Depeche Mode feel the need to remind us how controversial they are by reminding us how controversial they were. Some Great Reward [CASSETTE]

Artist: Depeche Mode
Genre: Reggae
Label: Sire
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (4 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: Depeche Mode's lyrical content, at times impossibly contrived, is a potential source of frustration. "I don't want to start any blasphemous rumours/ But I think that God's got a sick sense of humour/ And when I die/ I expect to find him laughing", goes the chorus of "Blasphemous Rumours", an anti-religion song using attempted teenage suicide and fatal car accidents as testimonial. Lyricist Martin Gore always scores points for creative rhyming, but one gets the feeling the choice of subject matter is nearly arbitrary, that the band could write equally depressing songs about a bad hair day--and mean it. But this is the fun, and maybe even the genius, of Depeche Mode. When it comes to patent controversy, they are as self- indulgent as they wanna be. "People Are People" also contained on "Some Great Reward", is no less of an eye roller than "Blasphemous Rumours", but its tone is inversely inspiring to the nihilistic picture painted by "Rumours". Two other opposites that attract, the naughty little industrial-lite, S/M-coloured "Master and Servant" perfectly juxtaposes the leaning-on-the-windowsill-staring-at-the-moon love song "Somebody". --"Beth Bessmer"

Songs of Faith and Devotion

Artist: Depeche Mode
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Warner Bros / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (121 votes)
Release: 1993
Summary: A bold - and to many listeners, shocking - venture into the transition of musical frontiers, from a band already renowned for a seemingly very different genre, Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion hit the music world like a proverbial earthquake upon its initial release in 1993.

Some fans rejoiced, others fulminated, and many more were for the most part just plain confused, as the line between the band's former (and considered to be, signature) style of music and that of more traditional rock seemed to blur for a moment.

To say, however, that Songs of Faith and Devotion is simply Depeche Mode's experimental crossover into a more rock-oriented genre would be both an injustice and an understatement. At closer listening, one begins to realize that this album is not about Depeche Mode becoming a rock group; rather, it is about the band's artistic journey into new lands of spirituality and darkness, touching upon subjects of a more noetic nature than those in previous albums, and with a greater depth and emotion than is found on the songs of most other albums.

Amongst the very best of SOFAD:

In Your Room (one of the greatest songs ever recorded)
Walking in My Shoes
Higher Love
Mercy in You
One Caress
Judas

This album is, in my opinion, one of the 3 greatest ever done by Depeche Mode - along with Violator and Black Celebration.

SOFAD is an audio journey most definitely worth taking - and returning to time and again, no doubt.

Strange Behavior

Artist: Animotion
Genre: Alternative
Label: Universal Music & VI
My Rating:
Rating: 5.0 (1 votes)
Release: 1989
Summary: My favorite Animotion album out there. There isn't one poor song on the whole CD. Each adds their own individual flavor to the mix, even the songs that didn't top the charts. Ironically, the songs that didn't top the charts (only a few did: Strange Behavior, Anxiety, I Want You, I Engineer) tend to be better and much more rock-heavy. Overall, Strange Behavior is an excellent album for anyone that appreciates New Wave and 80s rock/pop bands.

Substance

Artist: New Order
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Warner Bros / Wea
My Rating:
Rating: 4.5 (96 votes)
Release: 1990
Summary: It's a simple concept--the first dozen singles by New Order collected, a couple of them rerecorded--but it's also a totally entertaining seven-year history of the band that married British post-punk alienation to the relentless hedonism of the dance floor. The band's hits were always deeply unconventional (like the haunting "Blue Monday," essentially a seven-minute drum machine test with a short lyric that alluded to the Falklands War), but they were brilliant productions, layering dozens of electronic countermelodies and percussion tricks over Barney Sumner's uncertain warble and Peter Hook's lead bass parts. Though they're audio snapshots of the dance beats of their time, they've held up both as club classics and as idiosyncratic rock songs. "--Douglas Wolk"
