Final Fantasy XIII

Publisher: Square Enix
Platform: PlayStation 3
Genre: Role-Playing (RPG)
Rated: Teen
My Rating:
Rating: 4.0 (59 votes)
Release: Mar 2010
Summary: I am now a little over 16 hours into Final Fantasy XIII. Here's my (4.5-Star) review:

-As many preliminary reviewers have stated, this iteration of the Final Fantasy series is quite noticably linear in nature. Compared to the previous FF installments, which allow you to explore a vast open world from the outset and take on various optional side-quests, FFXIII gives you neither (at least for the first considerable chunk of the game). There is also little opportunity to "level grind" (although the term doesn't explicitly apply here, more on that later). You are given a proverbial "ceiling", a temporary limit to which your party members can be strengthened and developed, and for better or worse, you have to make the most of what's available to you to overcome the next challenging boss battle. Also, NPC interaction is highly limited, almost to the point of non-existence. It's like one big, long, winding corridor full of hurtles to jump. But damned if it isn't the most visually appealing corridor I've ever seen.

-Which brings us to the graphics. Square Enix has historically made painstaking efforts to keep its Final Fantasy games on the very cutting edge of the graphics scene, and FFXIII is no exception. The characters--even token NPCs--are all meticulously rendered and animated, each doing justice to the art of the series' premiere character artist, Tetsuya Nomura. Their facial subtext is unprecedented in the seires, making for very convincing performances. The way they move in battle is consistently a treat to watch, particularly in Lightning's case, as she vaults and flips about, slashing up baddies and tossing fireballs around the arena. Despite participating in chaotic battles with as many as 10 enemies on-screen, I've noticed absolutely no lag or slowdown in the framerate. The environments are positively SPECTACULAR in both their scope, lighting, and design. It's enough to make you cry, knowing that you're chained to a single path and unable to freely explore these awe-inspiring vistas. The prerendered cutscenes are even more beautiful, in my opinion surpassing the taut action and visual appeal of even the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete [Blu-ray] feature film. They occur fairly often, and they're an absolute joy to watch.

-About battles: the new battle system is a great departure from what FF vets might be used to. There are up to three party members fighting on your side, and you directly control the actions of the leader only. The other two members provide AI support based on their role in your party's currently active Paradigm (a battle plan that assigns specific roles to each party member, and can be changed on-the-fly at any time). Timing these Paradigm Shifts is the name of the game, otherwise you'll get pummeled in short order. Gone are the days when you'd have to manage your party's HP and MP between battles; HP is automatically refilled for all party members (even KO'd ones) after every battle, and MP is non-existent. Magic spells take the form of elemental techniques that are seamlessly integrated with physical attacks and other special techniques, in long hitstrings that cost only ATB Meter stocks. The focus is not only to survive and win battles, but to finish them quickly and decisively. It pays to have your strategy thought through before challenging the next group of enemies. Judiciously switching Paradigms in mid-battle is indespensible to victory, and necessary to receive a 5-star rank at the end of the battle, and ultimately more valuable spoils. Summons take the form of Eidolons, who join you as AI-controlled battle buddies when called upon. You can also press Square to enter the Eidolon's "Gestalt Mode", wherein it tranforms into some sort of vehicle that the summoning character rides on/in, unlocking new attack options and enabling you to execute the Eidolon's ultimate technique on command. It takes some getting used to, but the game offers plenty of tutorials to explain how to make the most of the options available to you. Personally, I find this new battle system to be a lot of fun.

-Camera movement feels a bit sluggish, but smooth. It gives the battles a cinematic feel, but when you're running around the map, it can be a pain. I like to sneak up on enemies so that I can get the intiative when the battle starts, but the slow-turning camera has robbed me of this opportunity more than a few times (though it's not a game-breaker).

-Character levels as you know them are gone as well. Your party members' stats are boosted through the expenditure of Crystogen Points (CP) in the Chrystarium Development system (very similar to the Sphere Grid system of FFX). As you advance through the Chrystarium, you gain new techniques and spells, and increase the levels of each character's available Roles. What does level up are your weapons and accessories. Spoils you earn in victory can be spent to allocate Experience Points to your equipped gear, raising their stat bonuses and special attributes, and even transforming them into other, more powerful items. I guess this is your incentive to shoot for that 5-star battle score.

-Okay, so it's linear. It hasn't bugged me one iota thus far, and I'm having a blast playing FFXIII. The story is deep, mysterious and compelling, and the characters each have very interesting, multi-dimensional personalities.

"Cross Edge" is action-packed with memorable characters, amazing items, and over-the-top battles to deliver an once-in-a-lifetime gaming experience. Story
The story of "Cross Edge" follows the adventures of hero and heroine York Neely and Miki Aiba. Awaking in a strange world, they are soon sought out by a little girl named May. She tells them that the world around them was created from souls gathered from other worlds and that if this stealing of souls from other places does not stop, sooner or later those other places--that is reality--will disappear forever. To stop this from happening they will have to defeat this new world's evil master by releasing all the souls now confined to his nightmare world. To do this they will need all the special abilities that they possess, as well as the help they will gain from others that they meet on their travels. Gameplay "Cross Edge" is a traditional Japanese role-playing game complete with world map, random battles, level grinding, item combining/creation using alchemy, etc. It also features heroes and villains from game franchises published by Gust, Capcom, Nippon Ichi, Namco Bandai and Idea Factory. As players set about freeing the trapped souls supporting the nightmare world that they are stuck in, they engage in turn-based team battles. This is where the characters from previous games come in. Players must enlist them to join in party-based battles. Success in these battles is based on the ability to string together specific moves into chain attack sequences, which in turn unlock even stronger combinations when successful. Players can also increase their characters' stats and abilities by acquiring additional costumes called 'forms' and redressing their characters in them. Female characters physical appearances can also be changed based on the form they're wearing. The goal of the game is to release souls. You can find and collect souls by searching around area maps. Exposure to souls can grant players items or unlock events. Along with soul related events, maps will also point players to other helpful locations such as event points, points at which other events may occur, and save points, where you can save your game as well as buy, sell and trade items. Key Features "Cross Edge" combines classic RPG combat with a grid-based Strategy RPG combat to create a hybrid battle system. In combat, a square grid will appear beneath the units. Some units are better at close combat and others at a distance, so players must strategically move their units to battle enemies. In combat, some units can toss up enemies and chain combo various moves for extra damage, like in a fighting game. By using characters from Gust titles, players can use alchemy to craft weapons. Change costumes to increase character’s stats and abilities, and in some cases revealing cut scenes. Explore dungeons to run, jump and attack. "Cross Edge" is bilingual. Players have the option to choose between English or Japanese voiceovers. Add to your PlayStation trophy collection as you play through the game.

The small fishing village of Alanya on the Arland Republic's southern border is home to the young alchemist-in-training Totooria Helmold. She is called Totori by her friends and family, and she wishes to become a great adventurer. One day, she resolves to make the journey to Arland, become an adventurer and explore the world beyond her hometown. She will make many friends along her journey of discovery - some new, some familiar. When her quest comes to a close, your actions over the course of the game will dictate whether she finds the answers to her questions, forges unbreakable bonds with friends, or takes a different path entirely. Gameplay
As with previous games in the "Atelier" series, "Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland" is a turn-based RPG with gameplay and combat rooted in alchemy and exploration. Events take place years after the previous game, continuing five-years into the future of the new heroine, Totori as she follows in the footsteps of her famous adventurer mother. To find out more about Totori's mother you become an adventurer in training yourself and explore the gameworld. Adventurers are a recognized profession in this world and one that is regulated via an Adventurer's License that contains various ranks. The rank of your license is built up by accumulating points, which in turn allow for greater access to areas of the gameworld. Points are gathered in a number of ways, including: maping out available lands, helping citizens, discovering and synthesizing new items that are found, discovering special landmarks and defeating monsters and bosses in combat.
Item synthesis involves obtaining recipes and then gathering objects that can be combined into entirely new items usable in-game. This deep system allows you to adjust secondary effects like the quality and traits of new items. In-game characters called Homunculi can be hired to automatically gather items you wish for synthesis, freeing Totori up to do other things. The efficiency of Homunculi can be increased by providing them with pies, which they relish. Battles are turn-based, initiated by random encounters with enemies. Totori can hire up to two party members from characters that she encounters throughout the gameworld, and she can change members at will. Party members can help when Totori is attacked via the game's Assist System, each in a specific way. These characters can also assist in attacks that Tori initiates. Dealing damage to enemies or using the Assist System can raise your character's Super Move gauges. Once filled, characters will gain access to their Super Move, which can be used to deal maximum damage. Players can spent countless hours adventuring unexplored lands and synthesize rare items. Classic style RPG Beautiful Cel Shading Animation 12 Challenging Chapters Synopsis
The Alchemist of Arland is a classically styled role-playing game, set in a realm of alchemy and magic, with turn-based battles and complex character development. Based on a long-running Japanese series, it is the fourth console game in developer Gust's Atelier series to be released in North America, and the first developed for PS3. The game's graphics employ cel-shaded 3D characters and finely detailed 2D backgrounds, to create the effect of playing through a high-definition anime feature. Combat plays out with each character and enemy making its attack in turn. Positioning is not important in the abstract battles, but using the most effective attacks at the right times, against creatures with different elemental strengths or weaknesses, can make a significant difference in a close fight. The game's alchemy interface allows players to combine quest rewards and found objects into tools, armor, and weapons of great power or specific use. The game's ultimate challenge is to create the rarest object in the world - an object perhaps powerful enough to save the realm, or destroy it -- using exceptional ingredients and alchemistic expertise gathered throughout the adventure. The plot plays out as a series of 12 great tasks, each of which must be accomplished within a limited amount of game time, in order to proceed to the next. The story branches, according to the player's role-playing decisions, to multiple possible endings. Key Features: Looks like an anime feature; plays like a modern console RPG Conquer 12 challenging chapters in an original epic adventure Use alchemy to combine items in to rare and powerful weapons First in the popular Atelier series designed for play in high definition

My Rating:
Release: Sep 2014
Summary: Ar Nosurge is a Fantasy, Sci-fi, '7 Dimension' RPG, that takes place in a world where music and song can create magic. It tells the compelling story of a civilization that lost their planet and has been roaming the edge of space for 2000 years in search of a new home. In Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star, the player follows two sets of characters: Delta and Casty, whose goal is to protect humanity and save the world, and Ion & Earthes, who are trying to find Ion a way home to Earth. The player can interchange between both pairs and soon discover a way to combine their storylines and strengths to eventually solve the mystery that shrouds their ongoing struggle. Developed by Gust, Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star is an intricately deep turn-based RPG and includes a detailed synthesis system for players to create their own items. A unique character development system focuses more on the bonds and relationships between the main characters than their success in missions and battles, with the player's party growing stronger if the characters have a closer relationship. Additionally, character pairs fight together during battles in Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star. One is always the first line of defense, attacking enemies in melee with knives and swords while protecting the other, who is weaving a song to fend off enemies. The longer the song lasts the more damage it creates- not only to enemies visible on screen, but to ones that are in line to attack.

Resonance of Fate

Publisher: Sega Of America, Inc.
Platform: PlayStation 3
Genre: Role-Playing (RPG)
My Rating:
Release: Mar 2010
Summary: I have been playing games since 1992. I have played computer games, playstation, XBOX, Wii, DS, 3DS (etc.). This games battle system broke my mind for the first 2 hours. It takes some time to master the basics, but then understanding specials and bullet or weapon types and how your position on the map matters - all those things that make you an expert, is a whole second level. Of course, it's explained with a typical JRPG level tutorial (which is to say, not much at all).
There are a lot of fascinating idea's in this game (world traversal, for example, is like a version of Tetris where you build the road). It has some old school elements (save games) and the story never reaches a conclusion - I think that's what really prevented this game from becoming an all time great classic. There needed to be a third act to really tie some things up. To be clear, I don't need everything to be wrapped up in a bow and everything to explained - I am fine with ambiguous endings - but this story felt like it was missing the final chapter that all the events were leading up to. DESPITE that, as someone who is willing to put up with really bad game play for a good story, I would still recommend that people buy this game just to experience the interesting things that were done here.

Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed

Publisher: Xseed Games
Platform: PlayStation 3
Genre: Adventure, Brawler
Rated: Mature
My Rating:
Release: Aug 2014
Summary: This is my first review on Amazon so I’ll do my best to give you an entire overview of this game. To start off, this is an amazingly fun and unique type of game that will most likely fly under the radar for most gamers due to the zaniness concept of stripping clothes off from people.

Story/Presentation: You play as a boy named Nanashi (You can change the name and his appearance) and he took a part time job that will pay him with rare and collectable anime merchandise. Your character describes himself as an “Otaku” basically it’s an equivalent of calling him a Nerd or a Geek. He prides himself with the knowledge and collection of anything that is related to anime; hence why he signed up for the part time job. However, the “job” was a front for something more sinister. You start the game by waking up and realizing that you are strapped and chained. You are soon introduced to a man named Zenya. In reality, Zenya drugged Nanashi and converted him to modern day equivalent of a vampire. Zenya’s ambition is take over Akihabara (Where the game takes place) and drain the resident’s life energy away from them with the help of vampire minions. Fortunately, you are able to break away from your chains by a girl name Shizuku. After battling Zenya and his henchmen, you were able to escape and temporarily stop his evil plans. Both of you head back to the game’s headquarters called Mogra (A Videogame theme bar) where you meet the other main characters and also when the game and story begins.

For the visuals, it takes place in a very bright environment. Throughout Akihabara, it is constantly bustling with NPC’s (Non-playable characters) and filled with Japanese music. It also gives a nice recreation of Akihabara and portrays how lively it is. I read that the company that made the game, meticulously studied and researched Akihabara to get it close to 100% resemblance to the real counterpart. It even has actual advertisement (You can see them during loading screens) of real businesses and services that are in Akihabara. Also, the game has a lot of tongue and cheek jokes and satire that portrays themes like: Anime, Videogames, Social Media, and even breaking the 4th wall. The game does not take itself too seriously by having many comical and fan-service moments in the game.

Gameplay: For the most part the game is an Action RPG. The combat centers a simple but intuitive control scheme. There are multiple types of weapons ranging from Markers to a Glowing sword. Also there is a vast amount of clothing that allows you customize your character and find your own unique style. Your overall health, is represented by the health of your clothing. You can wear up to 3 levels of clothing: Head, Torso, and Lower Body. These clothing and weapons can be enchanted to increase its durability and attacks (Also can be applied to your female companions). In order to win a battle you must completely strip all the enemies clothing from head to toe. There are three forms of attacking: High, Medium, and Low attacks. Also, these attacks correspond to the position of clothing the enemy has. So for example, a high attack is useful with enemies that have headgear while low attacks are good for pants/skirts. For most battles, you will have a female companion or allies that will aid you in battle. There are useful ways to get the clothes off the enemies’ back either by force, chain-stripping (When you successfully strip a piece of clothing there is a chance you can strip more clothing by pressing a button via quick time event) or triggering a finishing move (Most female companions have a finisher) that can hit and stun a group of enemies at once. The gameplay is solid, however it can get repetitive down the line and also the overall framerate could drop due to a lot of action happening at once. However, the framerate is not entirely game breaking.

Also, as the story progresses it’s like reading an interactive novel. There will be moments in the game where you are given three options of how to respond to a situation. For the most part, you pick a decision that is based on your personality but there are certain situations that affect how the main female characters react to you based on the choices you picked. These choices, will affect the ending of the game as well.

Once you’ve completed the game, you can start a New Game + where all the clothes and weapons you’ve acquired from your first play through will carry over to the new one. Since there are multiple female companions in the game there are multiple endings so it gives the game some replay value and also entice people that are completionists (Like myself).

Sound: For the most part, the voice acting is amazingly well done. Each English voice actors/actresses did a tremendous job portraying their characters. All of them match the personality of the videogame characters quite well. The conversations are quite dynamic and there is no extra filler or tangents in the game that take away from the plot. If you like, there is an option to switch the voices and text from English to Japanese at anytime.

Overall, this is a very good game. Yes, there are slight hiccups with the gameplay but it does not take away the full enjoyment of playing this game. I have a feeling this game will have a cult following. I hope they make a sequel for this game and show that niche games can do well in the United States; which in turn allow many gamers to play games that only came out in Japan. I hope I was able to help you decide to get this game or not. Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

Summary: Story
In ages past, there was a being known only as "the Devil" who ruled the world through fear.
Eventually, the human race united and rose against him, and there soon emerged twelve Saints blessed with heavenly power who sealed away the Devil at last.

The incantation of binding used by the Saints was contained in a sacred text known as the Holy Verses. Fearing the incantation's misuse by malevolent forces in generations to come, the Saints erased the fact of their Sainthood from the annals of history, divided the Holy Verses into 12 fragments among themselves, and passed them down to their descendents secretly through the ages.

Since that time, 3000 years have passed...

And the Devil, never ceasing in his search for the descendants who hold the Holy Verses, has finally ascertained their whereabouts.

To aid in the collection of these texts, he spawned 3 servants who embody the essence of Elaborate Death, Sadistic Torture, and Humiliating Demise, and sent them into the human realm together with a "daughter" split off from his own soul.

Now all that remains is to undo the seal that binds him and visit his wrath upon the fallen human race...
