Sentinels: Complete Role-Playing Game

Author: Keven Siembieda
ISBN: 0916211339
Publisher: Palladium Books Inc
My Rating:
Format: Paperback Pages: 160 Rating: 3.5 (2 votes)
Release: Sep 1988
Summary: If you don't buy the first RPG book, you should get this one. It has all the information you need to create a character, play the game, or be a GM. Its not quite as complete as the first book, but it is sufficiant. The only problems are the few instances where statistics are slightly wrong or missing, such as the size of the MTA Titan, which has wheels 100ft wide, not the whole thing being 100ft wide and also there is no Haydonite RCC even though there is an entire planet of them. The only other problem is that there is almost no mention of the Robotech Masters, even though the SDF-3 mission was to make peace with them. Fortunately this is made up for with the information on the REF and the invid. A good starting book if you don't intend to play Macross or Southern Cross.

Shinjuku

ISBN: 9781595821898
Genre: Comics & Graphic Novels
Publisher: Dark Horse
My Rating:
Format: Hardcover Pages: 200 Release: May 2010
Summary: Writer and director Christopher "mink" Morrison (Dust) and legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D) join forces to craft an unforgettable tale of destiny, danger, and hard-boiled sorcery, featuring over a hundred original illustrations by Amano! In the year 2020, bounty hunter Daniel Legend finds himself tracking a quarry of a different kind: his long-lost sister. Armed only with his wits, his gun, and a mysterious postcard, Daniel makes his way to the heart of the seedy Shinjuku district of Tokyo, where a clash between two underworlds - the criminal and the infernal - threatens the very fabric of reality.

Southern Cross

Author: Kevin Siembreda
ISBN: 0916211274
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Publisher: Palladium Books
My Rating:
Format: Paperback Rating: 3.5 (3 votes)
Release: Feb 1990
Summary: Of the core rulebooks in Palladium's Robotech series this book is the most flawed. There is a lot of inaccurate information and some downright fabrications in this book. For example, the E.B.S.I.S is a complete fiction invented by Siembieda, and is rather amusing now that the old Soviet empire has gone the way of the do-do.

The information on core equipment like the Logan, AJACs, and Spartan (ie hovertank) is rather solid, however the book falls way short in identifying the various battliods used by the Southern Cross. Armored suits are classified as battloids while real battloids are called battle armor. Worse still the book fails to have a single picture or drawing of any of the Southern Cross' warships, and it has no stats at all on any of the Robotech Master's warships beyond the mothership and the dropship. At lot of really good stuff was just left out.

Once you get over that though then you have a fairly decent sourcebook. Yes, the section on the Masters is rather thin. However the book does a decent job with the Southern Cross in general and the nessary game materials are decently organized. There is some repetition (especally the redundant skill and combat sections) from the core Macross rulebook, but it is useful stuff that keeps you from having to flip through another book. I do wish that stuff was left out and the pages devoted to the Masters and the various spacecraft that were left out.

All in all, the book is so-so. If you're looking for Southern Cross materials then this book is a bust. However if you're looking to complete your Palladium RPG collection then it is a must! Unlike Invid Invasion and Macross, most of the OCCs and equipment are only printed in this book. So if you want a complete set of core rules then you have to have this book. You also need the anti-kevs for this book to make it more functional.

Still... not too bad.

Star Trek: The Worlds of the Federation

Author: Shane Johnson
ISBN: 0671708139
Genre: Entertainment
Publisher: Pocket Books
My Rating:
Format: Paperback Rating: 4.0 (1 votes)
Release: Aug 1989
Summary: Lets cut to the chase. This book isn't canon. There is even a disclaimer in the front publishing credits that say the book is an interpretation of the Star Trek universe by the author. Now the author, Shane Johnson, did get as much details as he could from official sources. The thing is there are questions that just aren't answered in other sources that Shane tries to fill the gaps in. Unfortunately Paramount doesn't count that official.

What this book has is details on the various races that have appeared on the Star Trek original series and The Next Generation. There is background on racial traits, culture and even a geographical view of their home planet. The information seems solid, and I haven't found any real contradictions to official sources. Then again I'm not a hard-core Trekker. So take that with the appropriate grain of salt.

The thing is you don't get detailed alien information from other sources. Sure the major races like Vulcans, Romulans and Klingons are covered in great detail elsewhere, but what about the Gorn, Andorians, Binars, Horta and others? That's what this book fills the blanks in. Same goes for various creatures mentioned or shown like tribbles, the mugato and even details on the Denbian slime devil. I think there is also info on various flora from visited planets too.

Alas, until you can get OFFICIAL information on this stuff this book is the only place you can speculate. If you are a do-or-die Star Trek fan that must have canon or nothing obviously this book isn't for you. However if you are willing to take the information without Paramount's stamp of approval (and you never know... it might end up accurate in the end) and can find the book at a pretty cheap price then go for it.

Star Wars: Alien Races: Galaxy Guide 4

ISBN: 0874311373
Publisher: West End Games
My Rating:
Format: Paperback Release: Sep 1989
Summary: Galaxy Guide 4: Alien Races is a supplement to Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game first published by West End Games in 1989. It was written by Troy Denning, and revised for the second edition (published in 1994) by Chuck Truett. Within the Star Wars universe, however, the book was imagined to be made up of excerpts from the Catalog of Intelligent Life in the Galaxy, Revised Edition by an Imperial sentientologist named Obo Rin, who was commissioned by Darth Vader to catalog the intelligent species of the galaxy.

The culture, biology, and game statistics of the following sentient species were detailed in Galaxy Guide 4:
* Abyssin
* Altorians (both the Avogwi and Nuiwit species)
* Aqualish
* Arcona
* Barabel
* Bilars
* Bith
* Brubbs
* Chadra-Fan
* Charon
* Columi
* Defel
* Devaronians
* Duinuogwuin, or Star Dragons
* Duros
* Fefze
* Flakax
* Givin
* Gotal
* Ho'Din
* Hutts
* Ishi Tib
* Iyra
* Jenet
* Kitonak
* Kubaz
* Laboi
* Mon Calamari
* Ortolans
* Ossan
* Ranats
* Ri'Dar
* Rodians
* Sedrians
* Sic-Six
* Squibs
* Talz
* Togorians
* Ugors
* Verpine
* Whiphids
* Xi'Dec

While many of these species did appear in the original trilogy, some were invented for the game. The background information for several of the alien races who had appeared on screen was also invented for the game. However, many of the new species and backgrounds were used in later works in the Expanded Universe with little modification. The most common retcons necessary are those where a species described as having its first contact with the Galactic Empire are shown in later works to have some contact with the Galactic Republic.

Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game

Author: West End Games
ISBN: 0874310652
Genre: Entertainment
Publisher: West End Games, Inc.
My Rating:
Format: Hardcover Rating: 5.0 (1 votes)
Release: Sep 1987
Summary: Class, is it possible that Star Wars + RPG = Greatest game ever made? Well, no. BUT I can tell you that the rules found in between these hardcovers IS the greatest rules for running in the SW universe. Since this review is being written about a book published in 1987 and the review is being written in 2003, after the two new movies and the *cough* HORRIBLE! *cough* D20 game, I think the makers were visionaries. I like the first book more than the second edition for one reason: movie stills from the GOOD (original) movies. Some of the rules need work, but otherwise, this is GREATNESS. BUY HERE FOR FEW DOLLARS, INSTEAD OF D20 FOR MANY DOLLARS.
